A lot of people might tell you that Parkdale sucks, but that’s only because they haven’t spent any time there; there’s actually a lot that this eclectic little neighbourhood has to offer both residents and visitors alike. If you’re planning on heading there anytime soon, here are 5 things to do in Parkdale right now:
5. Have breakfast at Easy Restaurant.
| Hands down, this is one of my favourite places in Toronto to get breakfast on the weekend. Easy Restaurant has an awesome atmosphere, with really comfy booths, and simply fantastic food, and it’s a great place to bring people that are visiting you from out of town. If you go, you must order the Huevos Divorciados; it’s my favorite thing on the menu, and it never disappoints, but just about everything else is good to eat there as well. But be warned if you plan on going on the weekend: this place isn’t a secret, and it gets fairly busy.
4. Have a pint at The Cadillac Lounge.
| The Cadillac Lounge is probably my favorite place to have a drink in Parkdale. It’s an established neighbourhood bar, and even though it’s a really big place, it still feels cozy and comfortable. With a great beer selection, friendly staff, and an amazing patio for the warmer months, it’s easy to see why it’s such a popular place in the neighbourhood. While I’m personally not a big fan of the food here, if you’re looking for a place to grab drinks with friends and listen to live music, The Cadillac Lounge is just perfect.
3. Go to the Toronto Tool Library.
| The Toronto Tool Library was born out of a pretty simple idea: tools are expensive, but people should still have access to them. Need to borrow a skill-saw? A jigsaw? A power drill? A simple screwdriver? For just 50 bucks a year, you can have access to tons of otherwise expensive tools, or just to tools that you probably wouldn’t use often enough to go out and actually buy. And if you have some old tools kicking around that you don’t use anymore, you can donate them to this great community cause as well.
2. Check out the Westend Food Co-op.
| The Westend Food Co-op works towards making sure local and sustainable fresh food is available to the residents of Parkdale, and anyone else that stops, by connecting local farmers with local eaters, and it does a really great job of it. While they offer everything from fresh fruits and vegetables to housemade soups, the Westend Food Co-op’s community kitchen also hosts a number of workshops, food demos, and cooking classes that promote healthy eating. If you’re looking for things to do in Parkdale, this place should definitely be on your list.
1. Take a walk down Jameson Avenue.
| If the first thought that comes to mind when someone mentions Jameson Ave is that it’s a shortcut to the Gardiner, then you’re missing out on a lot. Did you know that Jameson Ave is the MOST multi-cultural street in the entire country? It’s true. There are more people on this one street from more places in the world then anywhere else.
Back in 2009, an artist and a photographer also completed a pretty neat art project along the avenue. Black and white photos were taken of the eclectic people that make up this unique area, and they were blown up and added to street planters. If you never noticed it, you should check it out; it’s a unique way to show the connection between the neighbourhood and the residents that proudly call it home.
