Thinking about buying real estate? You’ll be spending a lot of time looking around at different places. Knowing a few life hacks for buyers will make it a whole lot easier to get the most out of it. From what to wear to what to look for, there’s a bunch of little tricks that’ll save you time and make looking for a place that much more enjoyable. Here are 10 of them:

10. If you’re looking at downtown condos, it’s best to go on Sundays.

Not surprisingly, there’s a lot less traffic and a lot more parking.

9. Watch out for raccoons.

Before you open those beautiful patio doors on a downtown semi, look for raccoons first. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been surprised by those aggressive (but kind of cute) little guys.

8. Wear slip on shoes.

You’ll be taking your shoes off a lot. Laces or complicated buckles will really slow you down, and get annoying after the first few places you visit.

7. Check out the neighbour’s yard.

How much effort someone puts into maintaining their yard says a lot about them; and you’ll potentially be living next to them and looking at it.

6. ‘For Lease’ always means ‘For Rent’.

It’s just a fancy way of saying so.

5. Odd numbers are on the South and East sides of the street; even numbers are on the North and West sides of the street.

When you’re looking for an address without a GPS, knowing this will make it much easier to find it.

4. Use 311.

Have a question about pretty much anything Toronto-related that you don’t know the answer to? Call 311. They know everything.

3. Find out if the back alley is city managed.

Some aren’t, and you could be spending a lot of time shovelling snow out of it in the Winter. One way to tell is to look for a city owned light in the back alley, or see life hack #4.

2. You can park for free at downtown condos.

Most downtown condo buildings have parking spots designated for visitors where you can park for free for a short period of time. Use it.

1. Be really really really nice to the concierge.

They know everything and they control everything. If you’re going to be living in the building, your life will be a lot better and easier if they like you.
